What Is a Z Purlin?
A Z purlin, also called a zed purlin or zee section, is a cold roll-formed secondary structural member shaped like the letter Z, with a stiffening lip on each flange edge. Z purlins sit on top of the main rafters or trusses and carry the roof sheeting, transferring roof loads back into the primary frame.
Beyond supporting the cladding, purlins act as struts that help resist longitudinal wind and seismic forces, and provide lateral bracing to the compression flange of the main frame, which increases the capacity of the primary structure itself.
At Acier Steel, Z purlin lips are formed at 135 degrees (45 degrees from the flange), which is what allows adjacent sections to nest and lap over the supports.
Why Choose a Z Purlin Instead of a C Purlin?
The difference is not cosmetic. It changes how the member behaves across a multi-bay building.
Z purlins lap over the support. Because the Z profile nests into itself, adjacent purlins overlap at each rafter and are bolted through the lap. This creates a continuous structural arrangement across the whole roof rather than a series of independent simply-supported members.
C purlins cannot lap this way. A C section sits flat on the support and works as a simply supported member between two frames. That makes it right for wall girts, eave struts, mezzanine framing and smaller single-bay sheds, but not for continuous multi-bay roofs.
This is why Z purlins are the standard choice on PEB warehouse and industrial roofs across India, while C purlins are used for wall cladding support and secondary framing. We manufacture both. See our purlins overview for the full range.
Where Z Purlins Are Used
- Pre-Engineered Buildings (PEB) and industrial sheds
- Warehouses, logistics parks and distribution centres
- Factory and manufacturing units
- Cold storage facilities
- Solar mounting structures
- Mezzanine floors and canopies
- Agricultural and poultry sheds
- Commercial complexes and long-span roofs

How to calculate your Z purlin tonnage
Example: 40 pieces of Z200 x 60 x 20 x 2.00 mm, each 6 m long = 240 running metres x 5.50 kg/m = 1,320 kg (1.32 MT).
Z Purlin Price in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
Z purlin prices move with the steel coil market, so rates are quoted against current coil cost. As a general guide:
- GI Z purlins: approximately Rs 80 – Rs 96 per kg
- HR / MS Z purlins: approximately Rs 65 – Rs 80 per kg
Four things move the price within those ranges: zinc coating, steel grade, thickness and order quantity.
Cut-to-length and slot punching are included in our quoted rate. Because we roll-form in-house at Taloja MIDC and buy coil directly from the mills, you are buying at factory rates with no trader margin in between.

GI or HR Z Purlins: Which Should You Specify?
| GI (Galvanized) | HR / MS (Hot Rolled) | |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Built into the steel | Requires site painting |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Periodic repainting |
| Best suited to | Coastal, humid and chemical environments; long-life structures | Sheltered inland structures; cost-sensitive projects |
| Relative cost | Higher | Economical |
In coastal Mumbai and Navi Mumbai conditions, galvanized Z purlins are strongly recommended. Painted HR sections typically fail first at bolt holes and cut edges, where the paint film is thinnest and the steel is exposed.
Steel grade: 250 MPa or 350 MPa
250 MPa is the standard grade, suitable for smaller sheds, wall girts and lighter loading. 350 MPa is a high-tensile grade that can allow lighter sections for the same design requirements, which is why most PEB companies specify 350 MPa for roof purlins.
Zinc coating: 80, 120 or 275 GSM
| Coating | Recommended for |
|---|---|
| 80 GSM | Interior structures, dry inland locations, budget or temporary projects |
| 120 GSM | Standard industrial sheds and warehouses, the usual choice |
| 275 GSM | Coastal belts, chemical and fertiliser plants, high-humidity environments |
The zinc layer is what stands between the structure and red rust. Within roughly 15 km of the coast, or in any chemical MIDC zone, we recommend not going below 120 GSM.
Slotted Hole Punching: Why It Matters on Site
All our Z purlins are punched in line during forming, so hole positions stay accurate over the full length of every section rather than drifting the way site-drilled holes do.
We punch slotted holes as standard, in three sizes: 12 x 25 mm, 14 x 25 mm, 18 x 25 mm and 20 x 25 mm.
Why slots rather than round holes: a slot gives the erection team a few millimetres of adjustment at every connection. That absorbs the normal fabrication and setting-out tolerance in the main frame, so your crew bolts up instead of re-drilling at height.
- Minimum distance between holes: 50 mm
- Standard edge distance: 35 mm
- Hole positions punched as per your drawing
- Plain un-punched Z purlins available on request
Z purlins are formed in a single continuous pass: coil enters the decoiler, runs through the forming stations, is slot-punched in line and cut to length at the end.

What is the difference between a Z purlin and a C purlin?
A Z purlin can lap over the support because the Z profile nests into itself, creating a continuous member across multiple bays. A C purlin sits flat on the support and works as a simply supported member. Z purlins are standard on multi-bay industrial roofs; C purlins suit wall girts, eave struts and mezzanine framing.
What sizes of Z purlin do you manufacture?
Web depths from 140 mm to 300 mm, flange 30 to 100 mm (maximum 50% of web depth), lip 10 to 25 mm, in thicknesses from 1.00 mm to 3.00 mm.
What is the weight of a Z200 purlin?
A Z200 x 60 x 20 section weighs approximately 4.12 kg/m at 1.50 mm, 5.50 kg/m at 2.00 mm, 6.87 kg/m at 2.50 mm and 8.24 kg/m at 3.00 mm.
What is the current Z purlin price per kg?
GI Z purlins are approximately Rs 80 to 96 per kg and HR Z purlins approximately Rs 65 to 80 per kg, depending on zinc coating, steel grade, thickness and quantity.
Do you supply Z purlins with pre-punched holes?
Yes. We punch slotted holes in line during forming, in 14×24 mm, 12×20 mm and 18×25 mm. Plain un-punched sections are available.
Which zinc coating should I choose for a coastal site?
For coastal belts, chemical plants and high-humidity environments we recommend 275 GSM. For standard industrial sheds 120 GSM is the usual choice, and 80 GSM suits dry inland or budget projects.
What is the maximum length of Z purlin you can supply?
Up to 12 metres, cut to your exact schedule. Longer lengths mean fewer laps and fewer bolted connections on site.
How long does delivery take?
Standard dispatch is within 5 to 10 days from our Taloja MIDC plant. 98% of our orders are delivered on the promised date.
Do you supply sag rods and cleats with Z purlins?
Yes. We supply sag rods and MS plates for cleats along with your purlin order, plus roofing sheets, decking sheets, flashings, self-drilling screws, polycarbonate sheets and turbo ventilators.
