Acier Steel Pvt. Ltd. manufactures C purlins, also called cee purlins, C sections, GI lip channels or MS purlins, at our Taloja MIDC plant in Navi Mumbai. We roll-form on a fully automatic line with servo drive and PLC control, supplying GI and HR C purlins cut to length and slot-punched to your drawing, with dispatch within 5 to 10 days.
Our C purlin range starts at 80 mm web, well below the 140 mm minimum of a Z section. That makes it the right choice for wall girts, eave struts, mezzanine framing, door and window framing, and the lighter secondary steel that a Z purlin simply cannot produce.

What Is a C Purlin?
A C purlin is a cold roll-formed steel section shaped like the letter C, with a stiffening lip turned in at each flange edge. The lip is what makes it structural rather than just a folded channel: it stops the flange from buckling under load, which is why a lipped C section carries far more than a plain channel of the same weight.
At Acier Steel the C purlin lip is formed at 90 degrees to the flange, giving the square profile that sits flat on a support and bolts up straightforwardly.
C purlins are also widely known as cee purlins, C sections, C channels, GI lip channels or MS purlins. They are all the same product.
Where C Purlins Are Used, and Where a Z Purlin Cannot Be
Figure 2: Typical C purlin applications: wall girts, eave struts, mezzanine framing, warehouse and shed construction.
The C section works as a simply supported member, spanning between two supports and sitting flat on each. It does not lap over the support the way a Z section does. That makes it the correct choice wherever a single-span member is what the design calls for:
- Wall girts and side rails: carrying wall cladding on industrial sheds and warehouses
- Eave struts: at the junction of sidewall and roof
- Mezzanine floor joists: supporting decking sheets over a mezzanine
- Door and window framing: openings in PEB walls
- Roofs on smaller sheds: single-bay structures where continuity is not required
- Purlin for warehouse and PEB structures: secondary steel framing
- Ceiling and partition framing
- Solar mounting structures: purlins and support rails
- Racking, storage and general fabrication
There is one practical point worth knowing. A Z purlin cannot be made below 140 mm web depth, because the geometry of the nesting profile does not allow it. So for the whole 80 to 140 mm range, which covers most girt and framing work, a C section is the only cold-formed option available. We manufacture that full range.
For continuous multi-bay roofs where members lap over the supports, a Z section is usually specified instead. See our Z purlin page, or the purlins overview for both.

Working out your C purlin tonnage
Multiply the weight per metre by the total running metres required.
Example, a girt run: 60 pieces of C150 x 65 x 20 x 1.60 mm, each 5 m long = 300 running metres x 3.93 kg/m = 1,179 kg (1.18 MT).
C Purlin Price in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai
C purlin prices move with the steel coil market, so rates are quoted against current coil cost. As a general guide:
- GI C purlins: approximately Rs 80 – Rs 96 per kg
- HR / MS C purlins: approximately Rs 65 – Rs 80 per kg
Within those ranges the price is driven by zinc coating (80 GSM at the lower end, 275 GSM at the upper), steel grade (350 MPa costs slightly more per kg than 250 MPa), thickness, and order quantity.
Cut-to-length and slot punching are included in our quoted rate. Because we roll-form in-house at Taloja MIDC and buy coil directly from the mills, you are buying at factory rates with no trader margin in between.

GI or HR C Purlins: Which Should You Specify?
| GI (Galvanized) | HR / MS (Hot Rolled) | |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion resistance | Built into the steel | Requires site painting |
| Maintenance | Minimal | Periodic repainting |
| Best suited to | Coastal, humid and chemical environments; long-life structures | Sheltered inland structures; cost-sensitive projects |
| Relative cost | Higher | Economical |
Girts and side rails deserve particular attention here. Because they sit on the wall face, they are the members most exposed to driving rain and wind-blown salt on a coastal site, and they are the hardest to reach for repainting once the cladding is fixed. In Mumbai and Navi Mumbai conditions we recommend galvanized C purlins for all wall applications.
Steel grade: 250 MPa or 350 MPa
250 MPa is the standard grade and is entirely adequate for most girt, framing and light secondary work. 350 MPa is a high-tensile grade that can allow lighter sections for the same design requirements, subject to structural design.
Zinc coating: 80, 120 or 275 GSM
| Coating | Recommended for |
|---|---|
| 80 GSM | Interior framing, ceiling and partition work, dry inland locations, temporary structures |
| 120 GSM | Standard industrial sheds and warehouses, the usual choice |
| 275 GSM | Coastal belts, chemical and fertiliser plants, high-humidity environments |
The zinc layer is what stands between the structure and red rust. Within roughly 15 km of the coast, or in any chemical MIDC zone, we recommend not going below 120 GSM.
Slotted Hole Punching: Why It Matters on Site
All our C purlins are punched in line during forming, so hole positions stay accurate over the full length of every section rather than drifting the way site-drilled holes do.
We punch slotted holes as standard, in three sizes: 12×20 mm, 14×25 mm, 16×25 mm, 18×25 mm.
Why slots rather than round holes: a slot gives the erection team a few millimetres of adjustment at every connection. That absorbs the normal fabrication and setting-out tolerance in the main frame, so your crew bolts up instead of re-drilling, and far fewer sections come back for rework.
- Minimum distance between holes: 50 mm
- Standard edge distance: 35 mm
- Hole positions punched as per your drawing
- Plain un-punched C purlins available on request
C purlins are formed in a single continuous pass: coil enters the decoiler, runs through the forming stations, is slot-punched in line and cut to length at the end.
